Buying and running a car in Bulgaria

Where cars for sale actually get listed, plus what registering and running one involves once you own it.

Where to look

  • mobile.bg Recommended

The biggest car marketplace — where dealers and private sellers actually list.

    Language: Bulgarian (browser-translate friendly)

Filter by district and check the seller's other ads — dealer stock sits alongside private sales.

  • cars.bg Recommended

Strong second marketplace, with some dealer stock overlapping mobile.bg.

    Language: Bulgarian

Worth checking both — the same car sometimes gets cross-posted at a different price.

  • auto.bg

    Smaller classifieds site.

    Language: Bulgarian

Fewer listings, but occasional private-sale finds that don't make it onto the bigger boards.

Getting on the road

  1. 1 Agree a price and sign a notarised sale contract — this is задължително at a notary, and the declared price can't be below the insurance valuation.
  2. 2 Take out mandatory third-party insurance (Гражданска отговорност) before you register the car.
  3. 3 Register at КАТ for your address within the legal window — you'll need Bulgarian residency (ЕГН/ЛНЧ) or a Bulgarian company to do it.
  4. 4 Pay the eco fee and the local municipal vehicle tax.
  5. 5 Buy an e-vignette for national roads and book the annual technical inspection (ГТП).

Official & running costs

  • bgtoll.bg

The official e-vignette (road tax) seller.

    Language: Bulgarian / English

Buy online in weekend/week/month/year options — it's linked to your plate, so there's no sticker to display.

No residency yet? You can't register in your own name
As a foreigner without Bulgarian residency, you cannot register a car in your own name — either wait until you have it, or register through a Bulgarian company.
