NAP registration & getting your EGN/LNCH
Getting your Bulgarian tax number, ЕГН or ЛНЧ, and a stamped address. The order matters.
The single most common mistake foreigners make is doing these steps out of order. Get the sequence right and the whole process takes a couple of weeks; get it wrong and you'll be sent back and forth between offices.
The order that actually works
- Secure an address (a signed lease or a notarised address declaration).
- Register your residence with the МВР.
- Receive your ЕГН or ЛНЧ.
- Register with the НАП.
EU citizens get an ЕГН; non-EU residents usually get an ЛНЧ. They work the same way for tax and banking, but some online systems only accept one — keep both numbers handy.
What to bring to НАП
- Passport and your ЕГН/ЛНЧ
- Proof of address (lease or address declaration)
- Any prior tax documents if you're transferring residency
Go early. The queue numbers for same-day service often run out before mid-morning.
